Lake Nakuru national park is spread on the flow of the great east African rift valley set at the backdrop of spectacular escarpment ridges, the rift valley soda lake is on an elevation of 1754 meters above sea level on the south the lakes richness in algae attract millions of flamingoes. The word Nakuru is derived from a Masai language to mean “dusty”.
Lake Nakuru national park is characterized by rocky escarpments, Europhobia forests and acacia forests. The lake is a birders paradise for bird enthusiasts there are lots of birds to see sort from flamingoes, the lakes size varies on the rainfall.
Lake Nakuru national park is located in the rift valley Province of Nakuru County; it’s approximately 160 kilometers from the country’s capital city and covers an area of about 188 kilometers squared. The climate is warm and dry it also has over 550 tree species.
Lake Nakuru national park was gazetted as a bird sanctuary in the year 1961 and declared a national park in 1968.
Lake Nakuru national park boasts with a variety of wildlife such as warthogs, black rhinos, white rhinos, Rothschild’s, lions, leopards, hippos, giraffes, water buck, zebra, elands, African wild dog, and primates like olive baboons and velvet monkeys. The best place to view game is at the baboon cliff, lion hill and at a water fall at Makalia.
Lake Nakuru national park is a birders paradise endowed with millions of flamingoes endowed with over 400 species of birds and other birds include; white winged black terms, pelicans, hammerkops, marabou storks, fishing eagles, pond heron, ardeola idea, grey crested helmet shrike, prionops poliolophus, African spoonbills, avocets, ducks, and many more . The park harbors both residential and migratory birds from Europe and North Africa.

Tourists can take nature guided walks to the unique Europhobia forests and come into contact with game also walk up to the game parks only waterfall.

Camping sites are available both public and special. The special campsites have bathroom, toilet and kitchen facilities.
How to get there
The park is approximately 4 kilometers from Nakuru town and about 160 kilometers from Nairobi this can be accessed by road transport or air transport and land at Nashi airstrip. The flight from Jomo Kenyatta airport is 25 minutes. The park has got three gates Lanet gate, Nderit gate and Main gate.
Lake Nakuru national park can be visited all year round but the best seasons are from June to September and from January to March.
